Reviews of A Reverence for Rivers

"Essays on rivers are nothing new. But when written by a talented writer, who is also a biologist, ecologist, and historian, the essays become something far more. But essays are only half the book. The rest is a fascinating dive into ethics, access, and our complicated relationship with rivers. "

“However you choose to read this book— as an angler, student, researcher, or ethicist— I recommend that you do. The stories highlight why we should expand our thinking to encompass all our relations, both as a practical necessity for ecological research but also as a moral obligation to the generations that follow.”
— Nathanial P. Hitt, West Virginia Rivers Coalition, review in Fisheries, September 2025

Fausch "integrates wisdom from a prestigious and fruitful scientific career with prolonged nature experience and deep reflection. The book will appeal to a range of readers who have experienced the wonder and mystery of rivers."

A Reverence for Rivers is an excellent book, beautifully and carefully written by an accomplished freshwater ecologist. This book is written in beautiful, poetic prose and a more creative structure. The author points out that “the best way to reach people is not with facts, but through stories” and that his aim “is to offer something of value to both mind and heart, to help foster the evolution of an ethic for running waters.” I believe he has clearly succeeded.
